The hotel has 2 function areas:

1) The Upstairs Main function room (suitable for large groups 40-160)

The main function room is located on the 1st level of the hotel (access via 25 stairs) this air conditioned area has the ability to be booked as a completely private function room. Facilities: 2 x pool tables, Pin Ball Machine, Ping Pong Table, 2 x flat screen’s, a 2.4 meter multi media projector and screen (all media types compatible) PA system with video jukebox (Over 3000 songs), male and female restrooms, outdoor smoking room, dance floor area, disco and stage lighting, fully stocked Private bar with 6 beers on tap including Craft Beers.

This area is suitable for any special occasion.

This area is suitable for children under strict adult supervision.

2) The Downstairs Oar house (suitable for smaller groups under 35)

The Oar House is located on the ground floor of the hotel and is suitable for disabled access, this area is located between the dining room and the beer garden, it contains a private area with seating for up to 35 people.

A minimum spend of $600 for food only applies to this room – no minimum spend for the bar.

The Oar house has 1 flat screen television capable of all media displays. There are in house speakers in this area and the music volume can be adjusted as requested. This area is suitable for children under strict adult supervision. Bar service is from the hotels restaurant bar (20 metres away).


(1) Main function room, $500 deposit with a minimum Bar spend of $1000 not including food/entertainment. In the event of not reaching $1000 the $500 deposit is forfeited. In the event of any damage to the Hotels property the deposit is forfeited.
SECURITY: A one off charge of $40 per hour will be charged for the supply of 1 licensed security guards for your function

(2) The Oar house, $100 deposit, upon arrival you receive $100 refunded. The deposit is simply to reserve this area for you and your guests.

Having a Bucks Nights / Hens Nights: An idea for your friend or family’s big day! We call it the Hound In Hand? Arrive at the hotel early Saturday enjoy an afternoon on the Punt in the main bar with your friends and our locals or go upstairs to our private function room and enjoy a game of Pool or Ping Pong in the company of our female or male wait staff, Then around 5.30pm you can enjoy an early dinner in Restaurant. Then it’s a quick 5 min stroll (downhill) to Wentworth Park Dog Track for a night at the track!!

Or a 5min Ride in our FREE Courtesy Bus to the city or Darling Harbour. We can also organize our courtesy bus to take you around to your chosen venues. We are more than happy to pick up and deliver guests of functions from Central or Newtown or within about a 10km radius. Please let us know when you book your function if you would like this free service.

Closing Times

The hotel closes at 12 midnight Monday to Saturday and 10pm Sunday. All function guests and hotel patrons must vacate licensed premises within 20minutes after closing.

Catering suggestions

The Friend In Hand Hotel has on its premises the Friend in Hand Bistro which serves a delicious range of Modern Chinese/Italian/Australian Cuisine . The restaurant is located on the ground floor and has disabled access. The restaurant is open 7 days a week – Noon-2.30 for lunch and 5-9pm for Dinner.
